Once There Chanced to be
A ditty for a holy day
Once there chanced to be
A chandlery fair
With the candles bright
And the candles’ glare
Blazing through the night!
What a wonderous sight!
While the banners white
Bound in rounds from there!
Bought I there a light,
Payed a price and fair,
Lit it, it burnt bright
In the night-dark air.
There was wrought a rite
Brought with bread and wine.
God gave to man sight,
What a sight divine!
There too was a maid
Selling candles there,
To our Lord she prayed,
Bright her eyes and hair.
Sought I there the maid
Sought she for some sign.
God, her fears allayed,
Gave her to be mine.
Once there chanced to be
A chandlery fair
Where the candles bright
Crowned two in their glare!
Blazing through the night!
What a wonderous sight!
Wedding bells in flight
Sound in rounds from there!
